SCALE UP PROGRAMME FOR SHRIMP
HATCHERIES
SHRIMP
HATCHERIES
In an effort to elevate shrimp aquaculture practices and ensure they comply with sustainability principles throughout the production chain, SSP has recognized the necessity of establishing guidelines to guarantee sustainability at the initial stage of the chain.
Therefore, in collaboration with the National Chamber of Aquaculture (CNA), SSP has developed the Scale Up program for Shrimp Hatcheries.
This initiative promotes the recognition of hatcheries that embrace sustainable practices throughout their production process. Additionally, it provides tools and guidance to enhance the social and environmental performance, along with improving the quality of their product.
Within the framework of this project, the Technical Guide for the Sustainability of Shrimp Hatcheries has been developed. The objective is to provide comprehensive measures, ensuring consumers that the hatcheries:
Comply with National regulations.

Ensure the health and well-being of the shrimp.

The Scale Up program includes activities designed to prepare and support shrimp hatcheries in implementing the regulations and standards outlined in the technical guide. These activities include:
Socialization of the program.
Training on the criteria established in the guide.
Hatchery evaluation through a pre-audit.
Preparation of a report with the results and recommendations.
Conducting a final audit.
Recognition for compliance with all established standards.
The training on the guide is aimed at hatchery managers, technical personnel from the hatcheries, and those responsible for environmental, health, and occupational safety.
All hatcheries can attend the training on the Guide to ensure they are qualified to implement the established measures.
But, only those hatcheries that are legally constituted and up to date with compliance with current environmental regulations can participate to obtain recognition.
The Scale Up program offers a series of improvements in the production process that significantly benefit the producer:
- Enhancements in the production process that promote sustainability in larval production.
- Increased production efficiency and larval survival rates.
- Compliance with international standards for the shrimp’s larval stage, improving its marketability.
- Optimization of resources, leading to long-term cost savings and contributing to environmental preservation.
- Implementation of environmental conservation practices within and outside the production system, benefiting the surrounding environment and communities.
Enroll and participate in the training on the Technical Guide for the Sustainability of Shrimp Hatcheries!
*Limited spots available.
** Participation is restricted to a maximum of 2 representatives per company.
The guide explores 10 criteria to ensure that hatcheries comply with sustainability principles at each stage of their production.
Therefore, it highlights practices that enhance production by reducing disease risks, improving the quality, health, and well-being of the larvae, and ensuring traceability throughout the process.
